Is there any special care required for a three-legged dog?

I adopted a 10 pound minature white poodle this morning from a humane society. The dog is a female, spayed, five years old. The only thing is that it has three legs and is missing her front left leg. She seems to be getting around okay. I do not know how she lost the leg. Is there anything special I need to do to care for a 3 legged dog? Thanks

Nothing special is needed. Dogs and cats seem to be able to do just fine if somehow they end up losing a leg. Be aware there are some things the dog will have difficulty with, such as stairs. It is next to impossible for a 3 legged dog to navigate down stairs when missing a foreleg. One leg simply can’t take the shock of landing on the next lower step and the dog will fall the rest of the way down. I had a German Shepherd way back when who was hit by a taxi in Chicago. The vet pinned her left hind leg rather than remove it. It was weird how she ran with a hind leg she had to swing out and around rather than bend, but she managed quite well for another 10 years. Don’t worry about anything except for going down stairs. The rest of the time, the dog will do just fine. They’re remarkable creatures, quite resilient. Good for you for taking in the dog from the Humane Society. I wish more people cared like you.
